American’s love Chai. And by Chai I mean “TEA” because I often hear so many people say, “Oh, I love Chai Tea!” What they are actually saying is, “I love Tea Tea!”
“CHAI” means TEA in India and is a derivative of “CHA” which is the Chinese word for TEA. Makes total sense, right?
There are stories that Chai is thousands of years old and was made as a healing brew in the Ayurvedic tradition to aid digestion, warm the body, elevate mood and keep the body free of illnesses like respiratory ailments, poor circulation, pain, and depression (just to name a few.) Each family, in each region combines their own magical mix of spices (Masala) to black tea leaves, often adding milk and sugar or honey, steeping for about 5 minutes or longer in some cases.
A traditional Masala Chai blend is a combination that often includes: Black tea (Darjeeling, Assam and even Nilgiri), cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, pepper, clove, nutmeg, star anise, fennel, bay leaf, allspice, coriander, cumin and even cacao in some cases. It can also be made with green tea and/or rooibos for a caffeine-free version.
We call ours “Naked” because in some instances we have seen chai flavoring added to the blend. Ours contains no added flavoring – only tea and spices. We highly recommend you try ours without embellishments (milk/sugar) first to get its full flavor. Here are some notes on this blend:

• Dry Leaf: Small dark leaves, spices and chunks of ginger

• Brewing recommendation: Rolling boil 212° Fº / 5+ minutes.

An herbal, caffeine version of our popular “Naked” Masala Chai. Inspired by and named after the owner’s niece Christy when she was just 3 years old because she loved a spicy brew. She’s 12 years old now and 2 belts shy of a black belt. Spicy tea for a ninja girl! The base of this blend is South African Rooibos and has cardamom, ginger, pepper and clove. Perfect for anyone who loves Chai, but wants to stay away from the caffiene.
